Book Review

I have had horrible luck with books. I think the phrase goes something like "Lewd, Crude, and Socially Unacceptable."

I decided to try my luck with a kid book, since contemporary adult literature is a little *cough* too adult *cough cough cough*. Now, I had some apprehensions about it, since I read the first installment of "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and wanted to poke my eye out it was so bad (the movie had that effect on me, too). It just goes to show that anyone can write a book (or make a movie) and be published (or produced), and, most of the time, they shouldn't do either (EVER! E-V-E-R!).

So, I tried out "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." It was really good! It awakened my dormant love for mythology, and even sparked Jeremy's budding mythological yearnings when I fed him tidbits. I had a hard time believing the protagonist was only twelve, though. Probably because he was written by an adult. That, and I was dumb as a rock when I was twelve, so it seemed a little far fetched to me. But, maybe I was the exception, not the rule.

Anywho, it was a quick, compelling read. I recommend it to all. It is a refreshing new kind of story: no vampires, no wizards, no prepubescent, hormonally imbalanced tweens. Just good ol' evil mythological creatures, cranky gods, and a young hero with a penchant for blue jelly beans who doesn't know what is going on. I don't think anyone has written anything new and exciting about the Grecian Gods since they made history three or so thousand years ago.

And, Emily: Don't worry, there are no dragons in the book. You may proceed safely.

Have you read any Brandon Sanderson books? He lives in our Stake and his most recently published book in the Alcatraz series has a character who is (in real life) Jen's next door neighbor. I haven't read any of his books yet. Has anyone???

Seriously, I agree with you 100% about Spiderwick Chronicles. I was teaching at the time that I read it and all the students couldn't get enough of them. Gag.

I have Lightning Thief on hold at the library. I am number 100 of 120 or something ridiculous like that. It could be awhile.

P.S. I realized the other day that I never thanked you for the darling magnets. So, better late than never ... THANK YOU!

Brett and I loved "The Lightening Thief" as well as all the other books that came after it, I think there are three or four. I don't know if you have read "Fablehaven", but we really enjoyed those books as well. Another favorite is the "Rangers Apprentice" books. They are written by some guy in Australia. Anyway if you are looking for some good clean books that we have enjoyed, you might want to try these. Happy reading!
