Bedtime Stories

Every night, without fail, Eva asks for a bed time story.

Most of the time she gets the quickly put together story about a confused cave mushroom, or the mean sea creatures in the ocean that persecute the humble star fish.

Some days I actually tell a good one.

Like tonight.

It went something like this...

Once upon a time there was a cow named Mirabelle. Mirabelle lived on a dairy farm with the other cows, and the farmer, whom she loved very much.

And the farmer loved her.

But Mirabelle was different.

Mirabelle was a purple cow.

One day, the farmer decided that Mirabelle should live in the woods because the other cows were mean to Mirabelle, because she was purple, and made purple milk.

So, sadly, the farmer walked Mirabelle into the woods, and sadly walked back to his farm, because he had to make more milk for all the people in the town.

Mirabelle watched him walk away, and then headed into the woods.

After a long time, she met a fairy.

The fairy said, "Hello, Mirabelle," and Mirabelle was very surprised.

"You know my name?" she gasped.

"Of course!" replied the fairy. "I am a fairy, and you are a magic cow! Whomever drinks your milk will be happy forever."

Mirabelle thought about this for a minute.

The fairy continued.

"Now, you can go back to your farm, Mirabelle," the fairy said. "But if you do, you will just be a normal cow."

Mirabelle decided that she wanted to go back to her farmer, and so she left the fairy, and walked back through the woods.

A little while later, she came across a squirrel who was sad and crying on an old rotting log. Mirabelle walked up to the squirrel, and said, "What's the matter?"

The squirrel looked up at her with beady, watery eyes, and said, "I'm lonely and sad and so hungry!"

Mirabelle sat next to the squirrel, and said, "I can help with that!"

And she gave the squirrel some of her purple milk, and the squirrel went home and was happy for the rest of its life.

And Mirabelle continued through the woods.

After a while she came across a little girl, who was sitting on the ground crying.

"What the matter?" Mirabelle asked.

"I'm lost and scared and hungry!" the little girl replied.

"I can help with that!" Mirabelle exclaimed, and she gave the girl some milk, and then gave her a ride home. And the little girl was happy for the rest of her life.

After Mirabelle left the little girl's cottage, she came across a woodsman, who was stuck under a tree trunk.

"What's the matter?" Mirabelle asked, not connecting the woodsman and his tree trunk problem.

"I was chopping down a tree," the woodsman replied. "and wasn't paying attention, and this tree trunk fell on me, and now I am stuck and bleeding a lot!"

"I can help with that!" Mirabelle said. And she pulled the tree trunk off the woodsman (because she was a magically strong cow), and gave him some of her purple milk. At once, his leg healed, and he went home, and was happy for the rest of his life.

By this time, Mirabelle was at the edge of the woods, and she could see her farm, and the farmer who loved her, and whom she loved very much.

And as they looked at each other, Mirabelle said, "I would love to go back to my farm, and the farmer, but I think I can help so many more people here in the woods." So Mirabelle turned around, and walked back into the woods and tried to find people she could help.

Every year, she would leave a bucket of purple milk for the farmer, and he would take it home, but he didn't feel very happy without his purple cow, whom he loved very much.

Many, many years later, the farmer was very old, and his farm was shutting down, and he walked to the woods, and Mirabelle was at the edge of the wood waiting for him.

And the Farmer and Mirabelle walked into the woods, and were happy for the rest of their lives.

The End
