The better to see you with...

Lily's tooth popped out today! But apparently, more are on their way, because she keeps sucking her little lip in...awww...

For as long as I can remember, people have harassed me about my eyes. I mean, is there truly anything wrong with big eyes??

Well, maybe I guess, but anyway...

A few Sunday's ago, I was walking down the hallway trying to deposit my children in their various receptacles, I mean, uh, classes.

As I wandered, I had Lily on my hip, facing out. A woman walked by and exclaimed,

"Oh, how cute! Whoa, her eyes take up half her face! Ha ha ha!"

I felt like tripping her, but I didn't. I just kept replaying in my mind what it would look like to see her tumble from those stiletto heels...

Anyway, I guess to me my kids have "normal" eyes. Yeah yeah, I get the whole, "define 'normal'" thing. So, yeah, Normal, as in like ME.

Is it a bad thing to look like a Japanese cartoon??? Big eyes, tiny mouth...

*shudder*

I guess I don't really think about it much. I mean, eyes are eyes...But when people startle you into thinking it...

I was sitting in my friend Besty's living room, trying really hard to be a good friend (attentive, empathetic) and I guess it was doing something to my eyes by the way I was looking at her, because half-way through what she was saying she stopped and exclaimed, "WOW, you have such BIG, beautiful eyes! I, mean, WOW!"

She then started poking them with a stick. Yeah...

She came over yesterday to drop off some thing and I guess my kids have the googly, empathetic stare too, because she said, "Your kids are so cute! I mean, they have such BIG eyes!"

"Yeahhh...I know." I said, squinting a little, pushing the kids back inside as she picked up a nearby stick.

Having big eyes isn't so bad. I mean, I have great peripheral vision. And Lily can see me when her back is turned. Josh and Eva haven't discovered their super powers yet, but when they do, oh man...

I think if people can make general commentary/bizarre gyrations about my large-optical-ness, I should be able to make commentary on their large features:

"Wow, you have large, caterpillar eyebrows! It's just amazing! Ooo, and when you furrow your brow like that, it looks like they are fighting!"

"Have you SEEN your nose?! It's just phenomenal! It's practically a monument to your face! NO! To Ginormous noses everywhere!"

"I have NEVER seen such a BIG MOUTH in my entire life! How do you chew without hurting yourself?? Do you ever lose food in that thing??? You know, I bet you could fit BOTH fists in there, if you tried!"

Anyway... Beware the Dara-Stare...

Haha! Of course family is allowed to poke fun at you.. but other people, that's just weird and a little tacky.. :D

"Weird and a little tacky"? No--worse! Rude, juvenile, and socially inept.

As for responding to their remarks, it's tempting to say something snide, but you don't want to descend to their level. The best response is no response. Ignore their gaffes. Change the subject.

When someone says that again like, "Wow, she has such big eyes" come back with, "I know, aren't they beautiful? I just LOVE the color!!" It will take the focus off of what they are trying to say and it might make them feel a little uncomfortable... (smile)
I get that a lot with Jacob's little left ear. It's a lot smaller than his right! Oh well, I guess some people feel like they need to fill in the silence with not so good conversation. Sorry!

that was funny!

I love your eyes! They are perfect. I love your kids' eyes too.

The girls at work have seen pictures of you and your kids and they love the big beautiful blue eyes.

Those other people are just jealous

I get lots of comments on my kid's eyes, too. Personally, I'll take big eyes over bushy eyebrows. Consider yourself lucky. :)
